I think python's telnetlib library is not capable of the negotiations send by my 1984.ws server (the telnet IAC byte is ' xff', which should be interpreted by telnetlib and not received by pexpect, but pexpect sees it anyway, then fails to decode it as utf-8, so I had to use latin-1 encoding.
